Friend Fridays - Tyler Cook

Hello everyone. It's been a while since I've hosted another author on my blog. It is great to reconnect with others :) Tyler is an author I met online, but we haven't met, nor have I read his book. As you may have figured out, I like networking with people. So in the interest of promoting fellow authors I sent Tyler a set of interview question so we could all get to know him better.

So Tyler…

WK: Why don’t you start out with telling the readers a little bit about yourself?

TC: I’m a native of Franklin, North Carolina.  I’m 23, who recently graduated with a degree in communication at Western Carolina University.  I just recently received a job at Keller Williams Realty, doing their social media and assisting with their listings.  On the side, I own a publishing company called Moonshine Press, which helps publish indie authors such as Eva McCall, Timm Muth, myself and potentially many others.

WK: What inspires your writing?

TC: I use a lot of material in my own life.  I have to look back and find things that are happy, sad or funny in my life that I could apply to the characters or situations that I write about.  These things help me through the hard parts of writing, which then allows me to get the book flowing better.

WK: Are you a full time author?

TC: Sadly, no.  I would love nothing more than to become the next Nicholas Sparks or J.K. Rowling.  But I don’t think that I will be able to write and publish books as fast as some of the career authors that are out there right now.

WK: ME TOO! Glad I'm not the only author out there who thinks like this!

WK: Who is your favorite author?

TC: J.K. Rowling.  Hands down.  Harry Potter inspired me to read when reading was forced upon students in school.  It also gave me the dream to one day write an epic adventure like the one that she produced.  I have recently discovered Jay Bell, whose writing has made me feel things through a book that I thought were impossible.

WK: How many books have you written so far?

TC: Two.  The first was A Guide to Historic Dillsboro, a non-fiction book that celebrates a historic town near where I live.  The book was my senior project at WCU that I had to complete in order to graduate.  I wrote it with two other students, which sparked the fire in me to write my debut novel shortly after.

WK: Tell us a little about your novel, The One.

TC: I personally don’t like to give too much away about this book, but it’s about a guy named Eli who becomes another victim of heartbreak.  His situation is different from the rest of the world because he suffers in secrecy, due to the fact that there’s a secret that may change how people look at him.

WK: How long did it take you to complete it?

TC: That was fairly easy.  Only five months.  The idea for the book hit me while I was in Mexico.  Once I returned to the states, I immediately started writing.  I wrote every chance I got.  I took a notebook wherever I went.  And during one of my part time jobs, I would write during my breaks.  I was so moved by this story, it was as if the story was bleeding out of my soul.

WK: Who is your favorite character in the novel and why?

TC: My favorite is Tori.  Originally, this character was only supposed to appear in one spot in the book.  But the deeper I got into the story, the more I realized that she was needed throughout the book.  She is what I call a “major-minor” character.  I enjoyed writing her so much, that I have thought about writing a story specifically about her and making it a sequel to The One.

WK: I find it interesting that your favorite character is a girl. hmm. Cool. I guess all our favorites tend to be the ones we enjoy the most:)

WK: When someone reads The One, what do you hope they gain from reading it?

TC: A sense of objectivity.  I want them to put the book down after reading it and have a new perspective on life.  And for some, I want it to change their attitudes about some stereotypes and prejudices.

WK: Do you have a favorite literary character?

TC: Harry Potter, duh!

WK: If you could sit down to dinner with one person, past or present, who would it be and what’s the one question you’d love to ask?

TC: I would say Abraham Lincoln (I’m a history minor and researched him for a story in A Guide to Historic Dillsboro).  And I would probably ask him if he really believed if he could restore the Union the way he did.

WK: What is your suggestion or piece of advice to new and upcoming writers?

TC: Keep on pushing through.  There were times when I was ready to give up on my books.  But I knew that there was a message that needed to get out there, so I persevered.  And don’t worry about what happens after you finish the book.  First, focus on the book itself.  Then, you can decide whether you want to get a publisher, or if you want to publish independently.

WK: Where we can find you on the Internet?

TC: My book are on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords and your local bookstore.  My website is www.tylermcook.com and my Facebook is www.facebook.com/tylercookbooks.

WK: I'd like to say thank you for providing links! It helps when we want to find you! And I am super glad you stopped by!

WK: Could you please share your favorite excerpt from The One with us?

“Diane got Eli’s attention again by saying, “Eli,  how are you supposed to find the love of your life if you don’t take a chance at finding it?  And even more importantly, how am I going to get any
grandbabies if you don’t find a good girl?”

“Oh God,” Eli moaned, cringing.

“I’m sorry,” she said.  “But you’re twenty-two years old.  When I was your age, I was married, pregnant with you and had a car and house payment.”

“Things have changed in the last twenty-two years,” he said.  He stopped, and then said, “You know, most parents would be glad that their kids aren’t getting knocked up or getting someone knocked up.  But you just can’t wait until I get someone pregnant.”

Diane ignored the laughing from Carrie and said, “Eli,” she placed her hand on top of his arm from across the granite counter top to keep him from walking away, “I am very glad that you haven’t gotten anybody pregnant.  Sure, you’re not ready to have a child, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t start the journey that leads to that.  I want you to be happy, and if you come straight home from work every night, I don’t see that happening for you.”

He walked around the counter next to his mom and said, “Thanks for the confidence, mom.”  He smiled, showing that he didn’t take any offence to what she said.  He kissed her on the cheek goodbye.

She kissed him back, “Have a great day, sweetie.  And remember; start finding your soul mate!”

Eli shut the door behind him and went down the back porch steps that lead to the driveway where his white Civic Hybrid sat.  He got inside, and sat there for a second before turning the car on and putting it in reverse.

I wonder what they’d think if they knew the truth about me.

Throwback Thursday - Weightless from 2013

I am blogging in 2015 (flowing my PLAN) and for THURSDAYS I thought I would do a run of "throwbacks" so see where I was years ago and compare it to now. I will comment on the post from January 2013( below) in red.

This is what I wrote:

I’m blogging again. (sounds like me) I can’t help it. I’m excited, and happy, and anxious, and nervous. I blog to get my thoughts out. My Roommate’s a Jock? Well, Crap! is selling well which is VERY exciting indeed. JOCK is my best seller, which is WHY I'm writing the sequel!

AS OF 5:21 am on 1/4/13, Jock is still # 4 on Dreamspinner’s Best sellers http://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/store/products_bestsellers.php  (Links don't take you back in time, only to where the listing was.)

And #24 on Amazon’s best seller list of gay fiction! It was 14, but hey, whatever! It’s still up there. http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/books/10169/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_b_2_5_last (It DID make it to #1 for 19 days!)

AND, as was brought to my attention yesterday by “It's Bubbles, Hunty”, Jock is also at the top of the chart on All Romance eBooks “Best Selling Gay eBooks”. It is sitting at #2 right yet another day! http://www.allromanceebooks.com/category145.html (In a comment on this post, someone told me it had gotten to #1)

I was reminded of the feeling I have right now when I turned on iTunes and “Weightless” by All Time Low came on. I wrote a note on FB about my new fascination with this band, but lots of you on GR aren’t on FB. So, I’m bring it up again here because it fits my mood, and what I’ve been feeling lately. (I still swear this song in my theme song! LOVE IT.)

Lyrics go:

“Manage me, I'm a mess
Turn a page, I'm a book
Half unread

I wanna be laughed at
Laughed with, just because

I wanna feel weightless
And that should be enough”

Oh My Gosh! So true. (for me anyway) I know I will write other books. I KNOW I will write better books than “Jock”, but for now—I feel weightless! I’m a screwed up mess of a person sometimes, but in this moment I feel awesome!  (*and we wonder where Darian comes from?)

Because much of LAST year I felt like more of the lyrics as I struggled with TCOL forever and got nowhere fast:

“But I'm stuck in this fucking rut
Waiting on a second hand pick me up
And I'm over, getting older

If I could just find the time
Then I would never let another day go by
I'm over, getting old

Maybe it's not my weekend
But it's gonna be my year
And I'm so sick of watching while the minutes pass as I go nowhere
And this is my reaction
To everything I fear
Cause I've been going crazy I don't want to waste another minute here.”

SO HELLO 2013! (HELLO 2015!) It’s a new year full of who knows what ahead. But I don’t want to waste another minute doing nothing! I have goals. I want to keep them. #1 is to write or edit everyday. If I skip a day (like Wednesday) then come back strong and make up for lost time. Even if I only do a little each day, writing keeps my head focused on my passion! I don’t want to lose my drive. I love writing. And writing definitely has an effect on my moods and stress level. I NEED writing, like I need air! (still true)

So do a writer a favor:

“Make believe that I impress
That every word
By design
Turns a head

I wanna feel reckless
I wanna live it up, just because

I wanna feel weightless
Cause that would be enough

If I could just find the time
Then I would never let another day go by
I'm over, getting old”

And by “old” lets just say “Old hat” or “forgotten”. I don’t want to drag out my life’s ambition (writing) until what I write has no impact at all and I’m forgotten. I want to take hold of my time—NOW!

“Maybe it's not my weekend
But it's gonna be my year
And I'm so sick of watching while the minutes pass as I go nowhere
And this is my reaction
To everything I fear
Cause I've been going crazy I don't want to waste another minute here

This could be all that I've waited for
(I've waited, I've waited for)
And this could be everything
I don't wanna dream anymore

Maybe it's not my weekend
But it's gonna be my year
And I've been going crazy
I'm stuck in here

Maybe it's not my weekend
But it's gonna be my year (it's gonna be my year)
And I'm so sick of watching while the minutes pass as I go nowhere (go nowhere)
And this is my reaction
To everything I fear (everything I fear)
Cause I've been going crazy I don't want to waste another minute here.”

Sorry. Indulge me. I like that song. I feel like that song sometimes. Not with music, but with regard to writing. Right now I feel weightless because one little Romantic “Jock” comedy is doing really well. MAYBE, MAYBE, next time the same thing will happen but with TCOL… lol… My angsty, coming-out type drama about what happens AFTER Matt’s best friend dies and he’s left sleeping with Jamie's ex, Darian, and everything that ensues when he out’s himself at church! Lol, good times! Which is why I wrote Jock, remember? Angst was too much to take that long. I needed a break, so I wrote something funny for myself ;)

So… resolutions… Do you have any? MINE are:

#1 write every day  (includes editing) (I'm still trying to achieve this and 2015 has gotten the closest)
#2 Publish The Cost of Loving Done
#3 finish writing Names Can Never Hurt Me Done
#4 Write Darian’s story. This one has a long title. Love, Trust, and Learning to Live Again. I’m shortening it to LTLTA when I list it in blogs to come. I can’t wait to reveal the cover for this one. It is perfect!! Best cover ever! (Not done. eek. I do have the cover and I really want to use it!)
#5 Come up with a story for the sequel to jock. I have a title on my website. That may or may not stick, but I haven’t come up with a story yet. I’ll keep you posted! (I changed the title. It's now: No! Jocks Don't Date Guys. I am 68% done. I like my characters and I hope you all do too!)

I’m flying high. Feeling Weightless. Enjoying my two minutes of fame. I’ll come back down tomorrow. (I still feel weightless at times, especially when I read a really awesome review.)

~Wade

A commentator wrote: “…the excitement over getting my hands on some of Wade Kelly’s words!”  … DUDE! This is me flying higher. Hooked on MY words? Wow! (I can never hear that enough)

And don’t forget to read the review on Mrs. Condit Reads!

COPYRIGHT: I don’t own rights to “Weightless”. I copied them off of Lyrics A-Z

So that is all for this THURSDAY. Come back next week and see how things have changed. :)

The OTHER Wade Kelly

So, I was poking around Google because another thing that was brought up over the week end was using YOUR NAME for an e-mail address. Not sleepynija27@____ or TurtleLover99@____, but claiming YOUR name in e-mail and domain name. I mentioned that I use Writer Wade Kelly. (writerwadekelly@gmail.com) The comment was made, "Huh. So you're a writer, are you?" Yes, I am. But WHY have that in my title when people who visit my already know I am a writer? VALID POINT.

When I originally chose the name I did google it and found out there is some guy with that name. So, MEETWade Kelly….

I found this picture and a link to a blog called "The Noteworthy" … You can find it HERE. On this page I read all about a guy named Wade, but I am still not sure WHO he is and where he can be found. If he is truly "noteworthy" shouldn't I be able to find him somewhere? I THINK he is a part of the educational system in South Wales, but IDK.

Anyway… All that to say I found another interesting tidbit. I have mentioned previously that my name originated with a TV show called SLIDERS. It was a sci-fi show in the 90's and the girl character on the show was named Wade Wells. See below :)

What I found super cool and unexpected is that when I was searching pictures of "Wade Kelly" and this one showed up, the description that went with it was even better!

I DID NOT KNOW THAT WADE HAD A SISTER NAMED KELLY!!!!

This was an interesting fact to me as I thought I picked "Kelly" because I liked the name. Perhaps it was a subconscious decision based on knowledge I'd gained from watching the show for so many years??? I don't know. I just thought that was fun! Wade Wells + Kelly Wells = Wade Kelly!! hahaha.

Back to the original comment from the weekend…. WRITER is a part of my e-mail and web address because when searching for Wade Kelly I could have sworn a football player came up 5 years ago. Maybe I was wrong, but the reason I put "Writer" in the title was to distinguish myself apart from that guy. Now, maybe I am set apart front he Education guy from Wales. Either way, the "writer" part of the title is staying because it does make sense in the context. If you look up Wade Kelly you find me anyway.
